Mikenet Password Information

Reset Tools

The Mikenet account username and password, when logged in to MySMC (my.smcvt.edu), is all you need to access most campus systems.

Saint Michael's uses the ReACT Password Tool for users who have forgotten their passwords, or for unlocking a locked account.  The ReACT tool is a self-service system, available 24/7, and requires you to know your Mikenet username, your PIN number, and your SMC ID#.

Password Changes

Due to security reasons, all Mikenet users are required to change their passwords at least every 180 days.

Password Expiration Notice

When your password is due to expire, you will receive a prompt to change your password at login.   Don’t forget to change your passwords on your mobile devices to match your new Mikenet password!

Password reset assistance

You may reset your own password by using the ReACT link at: https://passwordreset.smcvt.edu/react/.

When calling or stopping by the Helpdesk for a password-related problem, please be aware that our Helpdesk staff is required to ask for identification before resetting a password or unlocking an account.  We cannot reset passwords via email.  Passwords may be reset only during normal IT Helpdesk hours: Monday-Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

What rules do I have to follow when changing my password?

  • Passwords must be at least 8 characters long and no more than 25 characters
  • Passwords cannot contain all or part of your Mikenet username or your full name
  • You cannot reuse your last 20 passwords; simply changing the case of one or more letters doesn’t satisfy this rule (Password1 is viewed the same as PASSword1)
  • Passwords are case-sensitive
  • Your password must contain characters from at least 3 of the 4 categories listed here:
    1. Uppercase letters (A through Z)
    2. Lowercase letters (a through z)
    3. Numeric characters (0 through 9)
    4. Special (!@#$%^&*()_+) character

How can I be sure that my password is strong enough?

The strength of a password depends on the different types of characters that you use, the overall length of the password, and whether the password can be found in a dictionary.  For the strongest password, use at least 14 characters.

Check the strength of your password at: https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/password-checker.aspx

Locked out accounts

For security reasons, your account will automatically lock after three consecutive failed attempts to enter the correct password.  You can unlock your own account by using the ReACT link, or wait fifteen minutes and try again.  As a last resort, call the Helpdesk and we can reset your password for you.
